ADVANCED DRY EYE MANAGEMENT

ABOUT DRY EYE DISEASE

Dry Eye Care

Dry Eye Disease is a common cause of irritated, red, uncomfortable eyes. It affects 20% of New Zealanders and can affect your comfort, vision, ability to read efficiently and your mood. It is often a chronic progressive condition, that if managed early results in better outcomes.

All Matthews Eyewear Eyecare Optometry Practices have optometrists with expertise in Dry Eye Diagnosis and Management. We want to give you the freedom to enjoy life without eye discomfort.

What can we do?

Dry Eye Disease encompasses Aqueous Deficient Dry Eyes, Meibomian Gland Dysfunction and Blepharitis. As there are different types of Dry Eye Disease, your optometrist will perform Diagnostic Dry Eye Testing to determine the quality & quantity of your tears, the health of your meibomian glands and the overall health of the surface of your eye. They’ll then recommend an individualized, holistic, management plan for your Dry Eye symptoms based on both the latest research, technologies and also their years of practice experience. Dry Eye Disease is often chronic & needs long-term management to both improve symptoms & prevent worsening.

This may include:

- Blinking Exercises
- Lubricating Eye Drops, Ointments and Lipid Eye Drops
- Manuka Honey Treatments
- Eyelid Cleaning & Hygiene Treatments
- Warm Compresses
- Prescription Topical and Oral Medications
- Nutritional Supplementation
- Dermodex Treatment
- Punctal Plugs
- Therapeutic Meibominan Gland Expression
- BlephaSteam Moisture Therapy
- Intense Pulsed Light Treatment

Where appropriate we’ll also work with your general practitioner to ensure any underlying systemic conditions are managed. Shared care is the best form of health care.

Advanced Treatment with Intense Pulsed Light

In the Auckland and Nelson / Marlborough Regions, we also have dedicated Speciality Dry Eye Clinics with Intense Pulsed Light Therapy.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy is an innovation in the management of Evaporative Dry Eye Disease due to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. The IPL device generates a quick & comfortable polychromatic pulsed light to stimulate the meibomian glands, over a course of treatment, in order for them to return to their normal function.

CLINICALLY TESTED AND MEDICALLY CERTIFIED - The E-Eye IPL Machine is made in France and had Medical CE Certification. It is one of the most advanced and researched forms of Dry Eye Therapy with research finding:

- Significant improvement in dry eye symptoms
- Improvements in lid margin redness
- Improvements in Inflammatory markers in the tears, tear layer stability and meibomian gland function

E-Eye IPL is available at our specilaity Dry Eye Clinics in Auckland at Epsom & Ponsonby Practices, and in the top of the South in Nelson and Blenheim.
